9 p.m. Wednesday (April 9) on TV’s National Geographic Channel"Clean-living youths or violent gang members? That’s the question National Geographic asks Ross Haenfler about Straight Edge lifestylers on its upcoming special “Inside Straight Edge” premiering at 9 p.m. Wednesday (April 9) on TV’s National Geographic Channel. Haenfler, a specialist in youth subcultures, plays two roles in the primetime documentary: expert and member." And lots more straightedge discussion on NG's blog. Just go through the entries. Much discussion of FSU (the crew, not the school).

so is it a crime for a violent gang member to enjoy a little tofu and mango juice every now and again?

I remember when the straightedge mafia was big on throwing eggs at cars and people. Lily was fairly young (12?), and we explained the situation to her. She said, "Eggs aren't vegan. They should throw soft tofu."

Well, frankly, a lot of the diy stuff was ruined by kids like the sXe mafia. They just wanted to throw eggs or shoot out car windows with bbs. It was the kids before them that ran stuff like the Mega Rock.
Rising rent prices, rising gas prices, the split between indie rock/emo and punk/hardcore - any number of things. It's the rise and fall. I know I haven't got time to run something right now, but I'm glad we've at least got the Shed and OAF House and St. Mike's.

straightedge also took a hit when it became fashion edge. don't get me wrong, all subcultures have fashion leanings and edge till 21 is nothing new. But sxe was pretty big for a while until all the fucking 14 y/o hot topic kids with their x's and tight pants dominated the shows. then it was just lame and frustrating. that's when i stopped Xing up. now there are like 3 sxe people in town i think.

I suspect that some of the people there would be people who already have issues with you, frankly, since I know they're popular with the tshows.org crowd. But if you buck up and start going to shows, that might ease off. No telling, worth trying.
